TrueCrypt creates a virtual encrypted drive on your computer. You assign an amount of space on your hard drive for the file. You then mount that drive using a password - the drive then appears as a drive letter that you can use just like your main hard drive - add and delete files etc. When you have finished working on your documents, simply use TrueCrypt to dismount that drive - the drive letter disappears from your system and all the contents are encrypted. Only those who have the password can open the virtual drive. |

This a handy little piece of software. You can keep all the files that you do not want others to see completely safe using this virtual drive. You can even store the truecrypt files on a CD, DVD or external drive. High encryption level means your stored documents cannot be accessed until you mount the drive using your password (so don't forget it!). |

Eraser is a free tool which allows you to erase sensitive data by overwriting it many times with various patterns. You may know, that when you delete a file and empty your recycle bin, that you don't actually delete the file - you just remove windows ability to see it - the file still remains on your hard drive (this allows data recovery at a later date). Eraser over writes these files so that they cannot be recovered. It includes a scheduler for "cleaning" the free space on your hard drive too. |

Great piece of software if you ever want to completely remove a document or two. You can choose the level of security you wish to use to over write your data (the higher the security, the longer it takes to complete). It also adds entry to your context menu (right click menus) so you can delete files on the fly. |

Fantastic zipping tool which is very easy to use, with a similar interface to WinZip. The context menu entry (right click menu) makes zipping and unzipping very quick and simple. Based on the 7zip platform. Opens all the latest versions of zip and rar files. HINT: Zipping one or more files into a zip file can compress the data down so that the overall file size is much smaller than the total of the original files - very handy for emailing! |
